Gunlsinger; not just a job, but a way of life.

As a child growing up in North Dakota I remember how I got told told all the old stories of cowboys and outlaws, sheriffs, and Indians. Those stories still got told as if they had happened just yesterday.

I picked up a real love for the lore of the Wild West, which naturally lead me to look into the idea of cowboy action shooting years ago. That never panned out for me really, but it put a seed of an idea in my. This seed would sit inside my head for a good many years, until it would find a fertile ground to grow in with the world of airsoft.

There is no Airsoft Cowboy Shooting Association, and thats a damn shame in my book. There are a few airsoft companies that even make some fine quality wild west era weapons, and the prices of these guns have come down (though finding them in stock can be hard).

There is so much potentail here for a new genre of airsoft; not only can we do all the traditional events that would happen but we could even have "The Quick and the Dead" style shoot out championships.

Another idea is old west style scenarios. Instead of it being miltiary like themes, you could do a posse versus bank robbers scenario, or maybe a defend the train from the robbers type of deal. There could be quite a few interesting scenarios that could be made from all those stereotypical "cowboy" themes.

Let's not forget possible airsoft re-enacting. There could be plenty of that as a sort of middle ground between MilSim and Cowboy Shooting genres.

Duels could be issued for high noon shootouts at the events, and specific duel areas could be set up. This would add an air of unpredictability to the events that would duplicate the feel of the Wild West nicley.

I hope that I can get a bunch of people all over the world to start thinking about the potential here, and maybe get some allies to help start and promote the A.C.S.A. All it woulkd take would be small groups of airsoft fans setting up small events at local airsoft fields, sooner or later I beleive it would start to catch on. Sorta "if you build it they will come".

Let me further my idea by also including what could be the first published airsoft cowboy kit. After all so much of airsoft is about that kit ;)

Gambler Hat
Gambler Hat

We'll start at the top and work our way on down. For my kit I will go with the classic felt gamblers hat. It is a classier version of the traditional cowboy hat in my opinoin.

The flat crown and indent make it a very distinct hat, and it just screams gunslinger to me, I would go with a wider and flatter brim. Think the hat that Kurt Russel wore when he played Wyatt Earp. Gives a  nice mortician look to appeal to the dramatic.

American Pioneer Shirt
American Pioneer Shirt

This is a simple, durable, and classic shirt. Perfect for the rugged no nonsense cowboy who has no use for a "Dandy" gunslinger..

The pioneer shirt is basicly the fore father or our modern day henley style 3 button shirts. A classic look all around and highly funtional.

I will go with black, because a Cowboy in Black is classic.

Storekeeper Canvas Pants
Storekeeper Canvas Pants

For my pants I would go with a set of canvas (denim was invented until around 1853, and werent mass produced till long after that) "store keeper" style pants.

The picture above shows the style, but I would have a black pair in that style.

Notice also the buttons around the top, and the lack of belt loops. These are things that pant didnt tend to come with till later years.

Calf Length Boot

Next we have a pair of period correct over the pant leg, calf length boots. Simple and rugged, this style of boot breaks in wonderfully.

Of course we cant forget the the silver spurs, after all what sound is the first thing that comes to a lot of peoples heads when they think of cowboys? Cha ching thunk, cha ching thunk.

Canvas Duster Style Jacket

To go over the clothes is a simple black canvas duster, again just classic.

Crossdraw holster
Crossdraw holster

A gunslinger will live or die by his revolver, so a good quality holster will be a must. You can go for a tooled leahter rig if your wanting a bit more fancy, or exotic, but for my tastes a simple and plane rig wears in the best (though mine would, agian, be black).

Also not there is plenty of room for spare ammunition. this being the old west days when ammo was pretty exspensive, you learned to aim your shots well, instead of the spray and pray found in most airsoft. Those rounds will likely be all your reloads available.

Also note that this is a crossdraw holster ( the gun sits on your weak hand side and you reach over and draw it out across your stomach), and not your regular drop leg style. This is personal preference, and most people tend to find the crossdraw a little difficult and/or uncomfortable.

Marushin Colt.45 "Peacemaker"
Marushin Colt.45 "Peacemaker"

Redwolf airsoft is quite frankly the only place I would go for my Wild West weapons.

This is the Marushin version of the Colt .45 "Peacemaker". This is most likely the most well known side arm of the old west, and it got it's names because of all the arguments that eventuallu got settled one way or another by a person using a Colt .45.

And finnaly we are down to the long arm section of our cowboy kit.

Here are the KTW Winchester M1873 brothers for your inspection. The come in the full length version and Randall; a pistol grip style M1873 that was a bit rarer in the wild west.

Cowboy airsoft, IMHO, is a great idea but from my experience, to many airsoft players are more interested in hi-cap mags and kit. Cowboy shooters would rather spend their money on real steal... so it may be hard to recruit people to the organization.
